Fun fact: Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras, a PONCHO benefactor since 1965, is the largest youth symphony organization in the United States. Bet you didn't know that. Founded in 1942, SYSO has grown to serve over 1,100 students a year. A leader in Northwest arts education, programs include four full orchestras, summer festivals and partnerships with local public schools. Over 15% of Seattle Symphony musicians are SYSO alums, and many more play in the orchestras of the Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Auburn Symphony, Bellevue Philharmonic, and Orchestra Seattle, to name a few. The internationally acclaimed Kronos Quartet was founded by students of Marrowstone, SYSO's flagship summer program.
"We're not just creating future musicians," says Music Director Stephen Rogers Radcliffe. "We're creating future arts patrons and philanthropic leaders. By exposing these extremely talented kids to great composers and great musical coaches, we're creating an inspirational environment. These kids leave our programs having come in direct contact with great art -- more than that: they've created great art. They'll carry that with them whether they become musicians or not. Some of these students are going to grow up to be lawyers, doctors, scientists, engineers and business leaders. Our programs make our future leaders better people."
SYSO's flagship orchestra, the Seattle Youth Symphony, celebrates its 65th Anniversary this year. Season highlights include a performance of William Walton's powerful Cello Concerto with Seattle Symphony principal cellist Joshua Roman and searing performances of Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony, Ravel's La Valse and Richard Strauss's Death and Transfiguration. Five Scholarship Chamber Ensembles will act as student ambassadors this year for SYSO's programs in the community.
As the year draws to a close, please consider making a charitable gift to PONCHO this year! We need your support to connect youth to art and to support both established and emerging arts organizations in our community. Your support is essential to our ability to continue to foster a strong and healthy arts community that we can all experience and enjoy!
