PONCHO’s fundraising year got off to a great start by raising just over $555,000 at its October 21st International Wine Auction, “A Toast to the Arts”. The auction night revenues were the highest in the event’s 16-year history. Photos from the event are available at Team Photogenic Web site.
“We couldn’t be more pleased with the results because, bottom line, the more we make the more we are able to give to our local artists and arts organizations,” said Joe Walter, Wine Auction Co-Chair. “We had great wine lots donated by winemakers and collectors and so many generous patrons in the room – a certain formula for a successful event.”
Included in the evening’s revenues was $58,600 that will go directly to arts education programs around the state. The arts education appeal was presented by directors of three Tony Award-nominated PONCHO beneficiary organizations: Laura Penn (INTIMAN Theatre), David Armstrong (The 5th Avenue Theatre), and Donald Byrd (Spectrum Dance Theatre).
“We were thrilled and honored to have three leaders from Tony-nominated arts organizations join us during the evening to underscore the importance of arts in our community,” John Klein, Wine Auction Co-Chair pointed out. “Seeing the three of them on the stage spoke volumes about the world-class quality of arts we enjoy in the Northwest.”
This year’s event featured over 200 silent auction lots and 68 live items. Some of the exceptional lots included in the auction were: A Signed Copy of Donald & Petie Kladstrup’s “Wine & War” and Three Very Rare Bottles of Wartime Bordeaux (1940 Château Latour, 1942 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, and 1943 Château Latour) - sold for $4,500; The Three Bottles of Mighty 1961 First Growths, including 1961 Château Latour, 1961 Château Lafite Rothschild, and 1961 Château Margaux - sold for $8,000; and A Rare Mixed Case of 1995 Domaine de la Romanée Conti - sold for $11,000.
PONCHO 2006 Vintner’s Dinner
|
The Honorary Winemaker for this year’s Wine Auction was Jon Emmerich of California’s Silverado Vineyards. He joined V.I.P. Guests and Auction Co-Chairs at a special Vintner’s Dinner held on Friday before the auction. For the second year in a row, the dinner took place at the art-filled Belltown loft of local industrial designer Koryn Rolstad, co-hosted by her adorable cats Bob and Mel. Three of Seattle’s best chefs, Jason Wilson (Crush), Jonathan Zimmer (Pomegranate Bistro/Lisa Dupar Catering), and Seis Kamimura (BOKA Kitchen + Bar) showcased their artful culinary skills, while four young talented musicians from Chamber Music Madness entertained guests with a mix of chamber music classics.

It will be difficult to top last year’s spectacular PONCHO Art Auction – attendance over 600 and auction night revenues up 75 percent – “but we will”, Co-Chairs Shannon Flora and Reed Atkin agreed. Preparations for this year’s 6th Annual PONCHO Invitational Fine Art Auction, Arts Matter, are already underway. The event will take place on Saturday, March 3, 2007 at a new venue at Bell Harbor International Conference Center, Pier 66.
As always, expect a wide-ranging showcase of high quality works of art from the finest emerging and established Northwest artists and craftsmen. This year’s Art Auction will feature more than 300 works of art, a rustic Italian dinner menu and amusing entertainment.
The PONCHO IFA Committee is currently accepting artwork for the auction. Artists and collectors interested in donating to the auction can contact Inna at 206-623-6233 ext. 203 or inna@poncho.org for benefits and more information. The deadline for donations is December 1, 2006.
